Stephen Warnock blown away by ‘smart’ Cristian Romero moment as Tottenham footage drops on MOTD

Cristian Romero has once again been singled out for his performances at Tottenham.

Romero has been linked with a Tottenham exit in recent weeks and months, but that hasn’t stopped him from being a true star under Thomas Frank.

The Argentina international has scored plenty of important goals, with the centre-back netting as Tottenham could only draw with Burnley last time out in the Premier League.

He went on to have a decisive impact once again as Tottenham secured victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Romero caught the eye at Deutsche Bank Park, with Stephen Warnock picking out one true moment of quality from the skipper.

Cristian Romero stars with assist vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Romero is popular with his Tottenham teammates and for good reason.

The 27-year-old has really stepped up this season and proved exactly why he wears the armband at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That was once again on show against the Bundesliga outfit, with the defender chipping in with six defensive contributions while winning six duels.

He also managed to create three chances from centre-half, while maintaining a 96 per cent pass accuracy throughout the league phase clash.

That was only boosted when Romero grabbed an assist for Randal Kolo Muani’s opener as the Argentine’s header across goal found the forward for a tap-in.

Warnock spoke out about the goal on Match of the Day on Wednesday and gushed over the assist from the centre-back.

He said: “They were clinical, and that was the most important thing when you’re looking to score goals away from home. Kolo Muani does extremely well because what you need is your striker in the middle of the penalty area to get you goals.

Credit to Romero, he is a threat from set pieces, and that back-post header is such a sensible, smart header. He’s put it into an area and hopes that’s where his striker is. It’s a scruffy finish, but it doesn’t matter.

Why have Tottenham succeeded in the Champions League?

There has to be serious questions surrounding Spurs right now about why they have been so shocking in the Premier League, but excellent in Europe.

Frank is under real pressure of the sack in N17, but looking at the Champions League table, you would assume there is no problem at all.

Warnock believes he has uncovered the reason behind this rift between competitions, with Frankfurt representing a perfect example.

The ex-Liverpool man added: “They’ve done brilliantly [in the Champions League]. There will have been a feeling of, ‘We’ve been here before.’ In terms of being in Frankfurt and getting a result. So, there will have been plenty of confidence from that.

It suits the English teams because all the teams want to have a go in the Champions League. In the Premier League, Spurs struggle to beat teams that sit back. Frankfurt, as bad as they are, still have a go and want to commit players forward.

It is true that the Lilywhites have struggled against low-blocks this campaign, but they need to work around that rather than making an excuse of it.
