Postecoglou needs to axe Son at half-time v Southampton to avoid Tottenham sack

Ange Postecoglou needs to axe Son Heung-min at half-time against Southampton if he wants to save himself from the sack at Tottenham.

Postecoglou took a big risk by leaving one Spurs player on the bench for the Premier League clash against Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (6 April).

However, for now, this decision doesn’t seem to have been too costly, with Spurs leading at the break.

Brennan Johnson eased some of the pressure on Postecoglou as he smashed home a Djed Spence cutback to give Tottenham the lead after 12 minutes.

Lucas Bergvall thought he had doubled the hosts’ lead just past the half-hour mark, but his goal was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check.

Johnson did double Spurs’ lead minutes later; however, anything less than three points is inexcusable, and with Southampton still in the match, Postecoglou needs to make a change at half-time to kill the game off and ensure he isn’t sacked by Daniel Levy.

Postecoglou needs to axe Son at half-time v Southampton

It was expected that Son would be left out for Tottenham against Southampton.

However, the 32-year-old started on Sunday, although after his performance in the first half, it seems as though Postecoglou might have been better off leaving the forward on the bench after all.

Son hasn’t been at his best for Tottenham this season

As per Sofascore, Son was successful with zero per cent of his attempted dribbles and failed to produce a shot in the opening 45 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In addition, while he did complete one key pass and post an overall passing accuracy of 89 per cent, he also won just two of his seven ground duels and gave possession away seven times.

Tottenham need to see out win against Southampton

This current Southampton team are one of the poorest sides in Premier League history and will become the earliest team to be relegated from the division if they are beaten in North London.

Therefore, Spurs and Postecoglou cannot afford for this lead to slip, as that would be a true embarrassment.
