Postecoglou job ‘may have been saved’ as Tottenham training-ground update shared

Cristian Romero has been spotted in training with Tottenham ahead of the clash with Hoffenheim – and it may be enough to save Ange Postecoglou’s job

Tottenham have been enduring a wretched season so far, although a large part of that can be blamed on the injury crisis that has ensued.

Romero is just one of several first-teamers to have been sidelined in recent weeks, but an update provided by Jamie Wear will be of a huge relief to Tottenham fans.

Speaking via Sky Sports News [22 January, 10:39am], Weir said: “Rodrigo Bentancur, out with a concussion against Liverpool, is out there training at the moment. He’s actually alongside Cristian Romero there.

“That’ll be a sight Spurs fans will be very happy to see. He’s such an important player for them and they’ve really missed him. Ange will not want to rush him back, but it’s encouraging to see him.”

Cristian Romero return will be massive for Tottenham

With the injuries to Romero and Micky van de Ven, Spurs have been remarkably light in the defensive department but the Argentine’s seemingly pending return could be huge for their chance of revival and Postecoglou will surely have to take a risk on him imminently.

Via FotMob, the Argentine has won 85 per cent of his tackles this season while making 63 defensive recoveries.

With 28 aerial duels won and 64 won in total, Tottenham have missed his dominance at the back with the likes of Radu Dragusin getting exposed far too often.

In his final full game before injury, in the loss to Chelsea on 4 December, Romero won 100 per cent of his aerial duels and completed 87 per cent of his 83 attempted passes, showcasing his importance to the way Postecoglou wants his side to play.

In fact, despite having missed the last several games, Romero has completed a remarkable 790 passes this season, and when his long-awaited return comes – hopefully against Hoffenheim on Thursday (23 January) – it will be a huge boost for Tottenham and one that Postecoglou needs to consider.

In other Tottenham news, the squad were shocked by Postecoglou’s treatment of captain Son Heung-Min.
