Cristian Romero holds himself back as Tottenham star called best in the world
Pedro Porro has labelled Cristian Romero “the best centre-back in the world” – but ill-discipline is preventing the Tottenham defender from attaining that status.
Romero has been a key player for Spurs this season as their style of play has been revolutionised under Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou.
His performances have earned glowing praise from teammate Porro, who believes the Argentine has cemented himself as the best in his position.
Speaking on the Premier League’s official YouTube channel (17 May), Porro said: “Respect, respect for Cuti [Romero], the best centre-back in the world.”
Is Tottenham defender Cristian Romero really the best centre-back in the world?
Romero has enjoyed a strong season on an individual level in many respects.
The 26-year-old has been in fine goalscoring form for a central defender, for one, netting five Premier League goals this season.
His passing has also been superb. Per 90 in the Premier League this season, Romero has averaged 5.93 progressive passes with an average distance of 521.1 yards, as well as 0.2 through-balls, all while maintaining a 91.7 per cent passing accuracy, [FBref].
The Argentine has been equally influential when carrying the ball, averaging 62.53 carries per 90 in the Premier League this term with an average progressive carrying distance of 194.3 yards, while his 93.63 touches per game in the competition highlight his overall influence in possession.
Romero has not neglected his defensive duties by any means, either, racking up 6.1 ball recoveries and 2.13 tackles per 90.

However, his poor disciplinary record is a blot on an otherwise impressive season. The defender has picked up seven yellow cards and been sent off once, while also giving away two penalties [FotMob].
While these errors persist in his game, he will not be able to count himself among the very elite. Iron them out, and he has the potential to climb even higher.
