Ange Postecoglou gets it wrong as Pedro Porro starts for Tottenham v Sheffield United

Ange Postecoglou’s decision to start Pedro Porro against Sheffield United could cost Tottenham a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Spurs play their final Premier League match of the 2023/24 season at Bramall Lane (19 May).

After four losses in their last five matches, Postecoglou will be desperate to end his debut season in England with three points.

Tottenham arrive in Sheffield as heavy favourites with the Blades having already been relegated to the Championship.

However, should they slip up and get beat, Chelsea could leapfrog their London rivals and finish fifth with a victory against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs supporters will be confident of getting the job done against Chris Wilder’s side, although Postecoglou’s team selection, which was confirmed via the club’s official X account (19 May), might have dented that confidence.

Porro has enjoyed a largely positive season in a Spurs shirt.

However, the Spaniard has not been at his best in recent weeks, which was emphasised by his performance in the 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City (14 May).

As per Sofascore, the right-back was dribbled past once while he also gave away a penalty in the dying moments of the match.

Porro won just three of his 11 ground duels, committed three fouls and gave possession away 22 times.

He was just as bad going forward as he completed just 79 per cent of his passes, failed to provide an accurate cross into the box from two attempts and completed just 25 per cent of his dribbles.

Porro must show significant improvement against the Blades, otherwise, Chelsea could take advantage.

In other Tottenham news, the club have been urged to sign an “excellent” European ace following a transfer reveal.
