Tottenham Women star Shelina Zadorsky and Canada knocked out of the Women’s World Cup

Tottenham Women star Shelina Zadorsky suffered huge disappointment after Canda were sent packing from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after finishing third in Group B.

On Monday 31 July, Group B’s conclusion was dramatic as co-host nation Australia thrashed Canada 4-0 to leapfrog them in the standings, while Nigeria snuck through in second place after a 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland, who finished last.

Canada were in a good position heading into the final day having drawn with Nigeria and defeating the Republic of Ireland in their previous fixtures and a draw would have sent them through to the knockout phases of the competition.

But the Aussies were in no mood to mess around and put four past Zadorsky’s nation in order to ensure that they didn’t join fellow co-hosts New Zealand on the sidelines, with the Kiwis having been eliminated on Sunday 30 July.

It is the first time since 2011 that the Canadians have exited a Women’s World Cup during the group stages and will come as a real surprise due to the fact that Canada were the highest-ranked nation in their group in the FIFA Women’s rankings heading into the competition down under.

Australia and Nigeria, who both qualified ahead of the Great White North, are 10th and 40th in the rankings respectively, while Canada are seventh.

Although Zadorsky didn’t feature during the match against Australia, she did get minutes at the World Cup, when she came on and featured during her country’s 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland.

However, the competition is now over for the 30-year-old Tottenham defender who will have no chance to make an impact further down the line this summer. Zadorsky becomes the second Spurs star to be eliminated from the World Cup after Ria Percival and New Zealand were eliminated on Sunday.
