Tottenham Women midfielder Drew Spence proves she must start FA Cup final

Tottenham Women midfielder Drew Spence has demonstrated to Robert Vilahamn that she must start the Adobe Women’s FA Cup final.

Vilahamn has made history by guiding Spurs to their first-ever FA Cup final during his first season in charge of the club.

The North London side will face off against Manchester United Women at Wembley on Sunday 12 May, and Spence demonstrated recently why her name should be first on the teamsheet that day.

In what was something of a dress rehearsal ahead of the showpiece fixture next month, Spurs and United faced off in the Women’s Super League on Sunday (21 April), with the two FA Cup finalists drawing 2-2.

And that afternoon Spence proved she is more than capable of holding her own in midfield against the Red Devils.

Spurs would have been disappointed to leave the Leigh Sports Village with only a point having led for much of the match.

After Melvine Marlad had put the hosts ahead early on, goals from Bethany England and Jessica Naz had Spurs ahead by the 31st minute.

And Vilahamn’s side defended their narrow advantage up until stoppage time when Maya Le Tissier equalised for United.

While leaving with all three points would have been a big psychological boost ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester United, it wasn’t to be, although Vilahamn can take a lot from his team’s display, in particular Spence’s exploits in midfield.

The Jamaica international grabbed an assist with the one big chance that she created, while she also completed 96 per cent of her passes, with one of those key (Sofascore).

Spence also completed two of her three dribbles and was defensively strong, winning four of her six ground duels, blocking one shot, making one interception and one tackle.

It was a confident display, and one which proved to Vilahamn that she must start once again the next time Spurs play United, on what will be a much more important afternoon.
