Tottenham Women goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer sends message to Robert Vilahamn

Robert Vilahamn is spoiled for choice when it comes to goalkeepers at Tottenham Women.

Vilahamn’s second season in charge of Spurs hasn’t gone as well as he perhaps would have liked it to.

The North London side are currently sat sixth in the Barclays Women’s Super League and recently suffered a heavy defeat, losing 5-0 to Arsenal Women at the Emirates Stadium last time out (16 February).

While there have been some positive signs for the future at Spurs, this season looks set to be another midtable finish with very little sign of progress within the first team.

However, when it comes to goalkeepers, Vilahamn can have no room for complaint, and forgotten shot-stopper Rebecca Spencer recently demonstrated just how much depth Spurs have between the sticks.

Spencer keeps a clean sheet for Jamaica Women

Eleanor Heeps was in fine form for Spurs before the 21-year-old was replaced between the sticks.

She has now been forced to settle for a backup place after the arrival of Lize Kop in January. Therefore, this means that former number one Spencer has fallen even further down the pecking order.

However, the 34-year-old’s most recent international display perhaps suggests that she deserves another chance. Spencer and Spurs teammate Drew Spence both started for Jamaica Women as they secured a 2-0 win over Peru Women in a friendly on Sunday (23 February).

Both players featured for the full 90 minutes as Spencer’s performance between the sticks preserved a clean sheet for her nation, with goals from Jody Brown and Kayla Jay McKenna securing the win for the Reggae Girlz.

Vilahamn must hand Spencer an opportunity at Tottenham

Spencer is certainly coming toward the end of her career, and it is understandable why Vilahamn is focusing on Kop, who is 26, and Heeps.

However, Spencer’s display for her country showcases that she still has something to offer, and the shot-stopper deserves a chance to feature for Spurs between now and the end of the season.

The 3-0 WSL defeat to Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 16 November was Spencer’s last appearance for Spurs, and Vilahamn must ensure that doesn’t end up being Spencer’s final outing for the club.
