Tottenham Women go shopping in Manchester as they bring Grace Clinton to North London

Tottenham Women have officially announced the signing of Grace Clinton from Manchester United on a season-long loan deal.

The club confirmed the signing of the 20-year-old midfielder Monday (14 August), and Clinton will now spend the season in North London as she looks to help her new side bounce back from last year’s WSL disappointment.

Spurs finished ninth in the division last season, narrowly avoiding relegation as Vicky Jepson stepped in as interim boss mid-season and helped guide the club to safety, following the sacking of Rehanne Skinner in March.

Clinton arrives to play under new boss Robert Vilahamn and help him make a positive start to life in England after the Swede was announced as the new head coach of Spurs’ Women’s team earlier this summer.

And her track record certainly suggests she is more than capable of making an impact during her stay. Clinton is Liverpool-born and rose through the youth ranks at Everton, before eventually making her senior debut for the toffees in October 2020.

After making 20 appearances on Merseyside, she earned herself a move to Manchester United following the conclusion of the 2021/22 season, after the Red Devils had finished fourth that year.

Midway through the 2022/23 campaign, Clinton was sent on loan to Bristol City, and made a quick start to life in the South, scoring a stoppage-time winner on her debut for the club, helping them to a 3-2 win over Coventry United.

Her form would show no sign of slowing down as she would eventually end up scoring six goals in 12 games, winning the Robins’ Young Player of The Year award as they claimed the FA Womens’ Championship title.

Clinton also has international experience, being capped for the Young Lionesses’ Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 sides.

“As soon as I found out Spurs were interested I was just buzzing, and I couldn’t wait to get started,” she told the official club website during her first interview in the colours of Lilywhite (14 August).

“I am very creative, I describe myself as a risk taker, I always want the ball and I will never shy away from the ball.

“I know Spurs fans are a fan of Beth England and I want to be the person giving Beth the goals.”

The young midfielder will be hoping to make just as quick a start for her new club as she did for Bristol when the new WSL campaign gets underway on 1 October, with her team taking a short trip across London to last season’s champions, Chelsea.
