Tottenham Women: ‘Amazing’ Matilda Vinberg inspires Spurs to much-needed three points

Matilda Vinberg scored on her first start for Tottenham Women to inspire her side to a much-needed three points against Leicester City Women.

Spurs claimed their first victory in the Women’s Super League since January with a 1-0 win over the Foxes at Brisbane Road on Sunday (17 January).

It keeps the North London side’s chances of a top-five finish alive, with Liverpool Women six points ahead of Spurs in fifth.

Robert Vilahamn handed Vinberg her first start in Tottenham colours, and the 21-year-old repaid her manager’s faith in her when she got herself on the scoresheet inside the opening two minutes.

Speaking after the match, Vilahamn was full of praise for Vinberg, telling SpursPLAY (via Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 17 March), “She has looked sharper and sharper from the first day to now, and I thought it was the right time to hand her first start and her goal was amazing.

“Becky with the kick to Celin, she found Drew and that cross from Jess and the finish, it was a very beautiful goal.”

Spurs have a massive few months ahead of them.

Not only are they still pushing to match their highest-ever finish in the WSL, but they have an Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final on the horizon, after reaching the final four of the competition for the first time ever.

That match will take place against Leicester City Women at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 14 April, and their win over the Foxes will have handed them a psychological advantage ahead of that match.
