Tottenham Women add quality and experience to their squad as Amanda Nilden joins from Juventus Women

Latest signing Amanda Nilden will bring plenty of experience to Tottenham Women after her stellar career so far.

It is a very exciting period for Tottenham Women at this moment in time.

After a miserable 2022/23 WSL season in which they narrowly avoided relegation, Robert Vilahamn has been a breath of fresh air in North London, turning the club’s fortunes around.

There have been some hiccups along the way, but overall the football and results are better, with the club recently recording their first-ever win against London rivals Arsenal Women, beating the Gunners 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 16 December.

It was a positive end to the year, and 2024 has continued in the same way as Spurs came from two goals down to beat Sheffield United Women 3-2 in the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup on Sunday 14 January.

To celebrate the win, Spurs have announced their third signing of the January transfer window this week, and it is a very exciting signing for supporters.

Defender Nilden has joined Tottenham Women on loan from Serie A side Juventus Women until the end of the season, with the option to make the deal permanent in the summer (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 18 January).

This is a player who brings with her a lot of experience, even though she is still just 25 years old.

Nilden will be handed the number six shirt, suggesting the Sweden international is set for an important role upon her arrival.

There is no doubt that Vilahamn’s Swedish background would have certainly helped attract the player to the club, and Nilden’s quality is definitely not in question.

The defender has previous experience of WSL football, having spent two years with Brighton & Hove Albion Women and featuring in their first-ever season as a club in the competition.

She joined Juventus in August 2021 and has made 62 appearances for the Italian side, scoring seven goals.

Nilden was a part of Juventus’ triple-winning side during the 2021/22 campaign as the club won the Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Suppercoppa Italiana,

She also has experience playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, featuring on 15 occasions in the competition, and will now look to help Tottenham reach Europe’s elite themselves.

Spurs’ newest recruit has played seven times for her country, featuring as a part of the Sweden team which reached the semi-final of UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.

Leaking goals has been one of Tottenham’s main issues this season, with no side in the top seven of the WSL having conceded more times than the North London outfit.

They have conceded nine more times than Liverpool and Manchester United Women, who both sit three points above them, and Vilahamn will hope that Nilden helps provide some balance within the side to make them even more competitive in the second half of the season.
