Tottenham star joins Chelsea as official transfer announcement released

Tottenham Women will have nothing but well wishes as a long-serving player joins Chelsea Women.

Daniel Levy has decided that this summer is one for real change at Tottenham and has committed to making that a reality.

There have already been a few arrivals at Hotspur Way, with several more expected to come as the weeks continue. However, departures have been the real focus as of late, and there will not be a dry eye in the house after Spurs’ most recent announcement.

Tottenham Women announce the departure of Rebecca Spencer

In an official statement on Monday (7 July), Tottenham announced an agreement with Chelsea for the permanent transfer of Rebecca Spencer.

Spencer spent the last three months of the 2024/25 season on loan with the Blues and will now sign a one-year contract in West London with an option to extend until 2027.

Spencer has been a huge feature at Spurs over the years

The Jamaican made history at Spurs when she featured as part of the Lilywhites’ first-ever squad to compete in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

The goalkeeper went on to make 95 appearances for Tottenham, playing an integral role in their iconic run to the final of the 2023/24 Women’s FA Cup.

Spencer’s penalty shootout heroics against Manchester City Women in the quarter-final saw Tottenham progress to the next stage of the competition before reaching Wembley for the first time in their history.

There is no doubt that Tottenham fans will reminisce about Spencer’s stand-out performances over the years as they prepare to say goodbye.

Martin Ho has a big job to do at Spurs

Earlier this month, Tottenham announced that Martin Ho would be taking over as head coach after Robert Vilahamn was dismissed.

The Englishman will join from SK Brann after he guided them to become the first representative club in Norway to reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

But Ho has a huge task ahead as the Lilywhites return from a disappointing season. Indeed, the club finished 11th in the WSL while losing 10 consecutive games during the backend of their campaign.

Levy will no doubt want an improved performance from the outset, which will see Ho come under huge pressure to deliver. Therefore, the new Spurs coach will have a lot of planning to do to guarantee results in the coming months.
