Tottenham confirm goalkeeper signing, handed number one shirt

Tottenham Women have announced the signing of goalkeeper Lize Kop from Leicester City.

Spurs confirmed the signing via their official website on Wednesday (15 January) as the 26-year-old signs a three-year deal and will sport the number one shirt.

Robert Vilahamn has acquired top-level competition for current number one shot-stopper Rebecca Spencer, who extended her stay at the Gaughan Group Stadium until 2026 on 5 November.

Kop could face off against her former employers when Tottenham return from their midseason break to host Leicester on Sunday (19 January).

The Lilywhites have trusted Spencer between the sticks this season, but the 33-year-old has conceded 23 goals in 10 league outings, an abysmal feat that only bottom-of-the-table Crystal Palace can ‘better’.

With Beth England recapturing her best form in North London before the break, Spurs must stop leaking goals in the league while she aims to hit the ground running again against Leicester.

While Kop leaves a side only point above the drop zone, she has only let past 13 goals this season thus far and has proven time and time again to be pivotal in ensuring Leicester’s top-flight survival.

Robert Vilahamn enjoyed a positive first season in charge of Tottenham Women.

The Dutch international is a serial winner, having won the Eredivisie title twice and one Dutch Cup across six years with Ajax and boasts a wealth of Champions League experience.

Her arrival is a welcome and much-needed boost for Vilahamn, who resumes the WSL campaign rooted in midtable, 10 points adrift of North London rivals Arsenal in third place.
