Robert Vilahamn boosted as Tottenham Women confirm additions of two international stars
Tottenham Hotspur Women will have two fresh faces in the squad when they return to action in January.
Spurs are riding a wave of momentum under Robert Vilahamn, and that wave of momentum only seems to be growing.
After a string of poor performances, their first-ever north London derby win against Arsenal Women, a 1-0 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 16 December, represented the perfect way to end 2023.
It was a mixed year for the north London side, but 2024 promises to be much-improved, and the club’s business in January certainly shows they are heading in the right direction.
Two internationals have walked through the doors at Hotspur Way in as many days, and the experience and quality they bring to the squad will be a welcome boost for Vilahamn ahead of Spurs’ return to action, when they host Sheffield United Women in the Women’s FA Cup on Sunday 14 January.
Tottenham kicked off the year by announcing the signing of Sweden international Matilda Vinberg (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 2 January), who has joined the club on a contract running until 2026.
Vinberg arrives in the WSL following the expiration of her contract with Hammarby IF. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder might be young, but she certainly boasts experience, having made her senior debut at the age of 15.
At the end of her second season with Hammarby, Vinberg had been named the Damallsvenskan Breakthrough Player of the Year and Hammarby Player of the Year. After a double-winning campaign last time out, Vinberg has left a successful spell in Sweden behind for a fresh challenge in England.
Just as Tottenham supporters had caught their breath, a second signing was announced, with the Lilywhites revealing that they had acquired the services of Australian international Charlotte Grant (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 3 January).
Grant’s deal also runs until 2026, and the 22-year-old fullback joins the club following the expiration of her contract with Vittsjö GIK.
Grant is well-established at international level, having made 21 appearances for Australia and scoring one goal, during a 2-0 win over England in London back in April 2023.
In addition, she was a part of the Australia squad which reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup, which means she knows exactly what it takes to play at the highest level.
If both players can reach the levels they have reached previously in north London, Vilahamn’s side could have a very exciting second half of the 2023/24 campaign, with the long-term future of the club beginning to look in safer hands.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou could look to start one fringe attacker against Burnley in the FA Cup on Friday, despite his zero-dribble display last time out.
