Eveliina Summanen ‘key for Tottenham Women’ after international development
Tottenham Women will be keen to improve next season after a difficult Barclays Women’s Super League campaign.
Robert Vilahamn’s side flattered to deceive this season, finishing without a win in their final ten games to succumb to an 11th-place finish in the WSL.
Their post-season has been dedicated to securing the long-term services of players such as Martha Thomas and Lenna Gunning-Williams in a bid to maintain their core playing squad.
The Lilywhites were handed a big blow to their preparations as Ella Morris suffered an ACL injury on her first call-up to the England international squad.
Fortunately, they will welcome far more positive news emerging from elsewhere about midfielder Eveliina Summanen.

Summanen shines for Finland Women
Much like a host of the Spurs players this season, Summanen struggled to reach the heights of last season, although her performances in her last five games have been much more positive.
She remained a constant in the North London side, with only four other players clocking more time on the pitch than the central midfielder, and sat atop Spurs’ assists chart for the season with three.
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes Played |
Eveliina Summanen | 17 | 2 | 3 | 1,393′ |
She has been equally important for the Finland national team, racking up 74 caps and 16 goals since making her debut in 2017.
In the 27-year-old’s most recent performance, a 3-0 win against Belarus (30 May), she was imperious, making four tackles, two interceptions, and winning eight out of nine ground duels, as well as 100 per cent of her aerial duels [Sofascore].
These statistics are consistent with how Summanen performed at Spurs last season, where she was third in tackles per 90 with 2.2 per game, and second in interceptions with 1.6 per game.
She is also a free-kick specialist, and a string of excellent performances on the international stage could prove to be key for Tottenham Women as they look to improve for the 2025/26 WSL season.
Spurs need more from midfielders
The Londoners are blessed with having an extraordinary talent in Bethany England at their club, but they can not rely on the 30-year-old to solve the attack all by herself.
The England international scored eight goals, more than double the second-highest scorer, Drew Spence, who only managed three.
While much has been made of the club’s necessity to sign more forwards, midfielders with Summanen’s ability should also be doing much more to directly contribute to Tottenham scoring more goals.
