Creative Vision
Maddison is a primary source of invention for Spurs, and his creativity has been a monumental miss this season. His ability to unlock low blocks with disguised passes and dead-ball delivery makes him one of the Premier League’s most refined playmakers when fully fit.
Positional Fluidity
Maddison is mainly at home in the traditional “10” position (aka an attacking midfielder). But he can also operate a little deeper as an “8” if needed, or off the left flank. His intelligence allows him to drift between the lines, drawing defenders out of position and creating gaps for the more explosive forward runners.
Current Context
The current season has been heavily disrupted by long-term injury. His absence has been noted in the team’s creative output, and hopefully he can return next season still a Premier League player for Spurs.
James Maddison: The road to recovery at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur suffered a first low in a season swimming in them before a ball had even been kicked. James Maddison, their main creative outlet, suffered a season-ending knee injury in pre-season and has not been available all campaign. The loss of the key attacking midfielder was a huge blow to Thomas Frank, while Igor Tudor never even got to see him out on the training pitch. Encouragingly, late in March 2026, the England midfielder posted a video update showing him training in the gym and out on the training pitches. It remains to be seen if he will play before the season is over, but if he were able to get involved for the final few games, it could be a huge boost to Tottenham’s hopes of retaining their top-flight status.
What did Igor Tudor say about James Maddison injury return?
Igor Tudor’s disappointing interim spell as Tottenham boss may have come to an unceremonious end already. But the Croatian did allude to the fact that Maddison may return for the backend of what has been a tumultuous 2025-26 season in his absence.
“Yeah. Maddison is already doing interesting things as well, with the ball, sprinting as well. I saw him. He’s positive,” Tudor said recently before the international break.
Maddison has himself hinted that things are progressing well in his recovery, and while no date for a return is set in stone, if he were to return for the last few weeks in May, it could be season-defining as Spurs look to retain their Premier League status.
