Tottenham on high alert as Jobe Bellingham ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place
Tottenham had been tipped to make a move for Sunderland starlet Jobe Bellingham this January, with reports now suggesting a “gentleman’s agreement” is in place and Spurs should be on high alert.
Spurs will undoubtedly be looking to add to their squad this month, having previously been tipped to sign Jobe in a cut-price deal [Bryan King], and those chances may have just improved after a recent update.
Via Football Transfers [7 January], it is understood that Sunderland agreed to a “gentleman’s agreement” with Jobe that would allow him to leave the club to pursue a Premier League career if the chance arises, with Arsenal also interested.
Given the success that came from the signing of Archie Gray in the Championship, Tottenham may look to repeat the trick with the signing of Jobe, who could be available for around £20million [talkSPORT].
With the Black Cats just three points off the summit of the division, they will be reluctant to sell one of their most important players, but it could be a situation that moves out of their control.
Tottenham to sign Jobe Bellingham in January?
Very few clubs look to the Championship when acquiring new talent, but those that do often reap the benefits of it for what is usually a bargain price.
Gray is an excellent example for Spurs but Crystal Palace have been the most notorious for it in the Premier League, having picked up the likes of Michael Olise, Ebe Eze and Adam Wharton from second-tier clubs.
Jobe has been outstanding for Sunderland this season with seven-goal contributions from midfield and he could be an excellent replacement for Yves Bissouma should he leave the club.
There is every possibility that Jobe will opt to remain on Wearside in an attempt to aid their push for a Premier League return, but the prospect of joining a Premier League club may turn his head.
His situation is certainly one worthy of keeping an eye on as the transfer window continues to beckon for clubs around Europe.
