Tottenham player ratings v Newcastle – Johnson stands out, 3/10 truly woeful

Tottenham drew 1-1 against Newcastle United on their Asia tour on Sunday.

The Seoul World Cup Stadium hosted Thomas Frank’s team and the Magpies on 3 August, with the North London outfit taking the lead through Brennan Johnson in the fourth minute, but Harvey Barnes equalised before the break.

Son Heung-min may have played his final Spurs game, with a move to LAFC on the cards, and the South Korea international was the focal point of the match.

However, the big talking point at full-time was an injury sustained by James Maddison that left Spurs’ players visibly upset.

Johnson will be key for Tottenham

Johnson looked lively throughout the fixture for Tottenham, and apart from the goal, he helped create a few opportunities against Newcastle.

The ex-Nottingham Forest star has struggled for Spurs during pre-season, as was seen against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on 26 July.

Mohammed Kudus may be competing against the Wales international for a place in the starting lineup in the upcoming campaign, and getting on the scoresheet will give him a much-needed confidence boost.

Tel can’t fail to take opportunities

Tottenham made Tel’s transfer permanent from Bayern Munich this summer after his loan spell last season.

The 20-year-old undoubtedly worked his socks off at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, but when it mattered most, the young forward scuffed his opportunity.

With Son potentially leaving the North London outfit, Spurs fans will have high hopes from the Frenchman in N17.

Son in tears in Tottenham draw v Newcastle

Son was visibly distraught after being substituted for Kudus in the 65th minute during Tottenham’s draw.

The 33-year-old was embraced by those sitting on the bench, with emotions understandably running high over the prospect of the South Korean forward’s departure.

Having scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists in 454 appearances for Spurs, the ex-Bayer Leverkusen star’s influence in North London will be greatly missed.
