Tottenham may already have first January signing as Premier League manager speaks out amid interest

Tottenham have already turned their attention towards possible targets for the January transfer window.

The Lilywhites ended the summer with eight new additions to their ranks, and they have already outlined some clear targets for the winter window, despite the summer edition having only just closed.

Tottenham are eyeing up a move for Nathan Collins, after also showing an interest in the Brentford defender earlier in the summer, but they may have a far easier deal on their hands with another player that they have shown interest in.

Thomas Frank is seemingly keen to continue strengthening his squad, and he appears to have just been handed the perfect opportunity to secure a move for another of his summer targets.

Regis Le Bris shares unconvincing Dennis Cirkin verdict amid Spurs interest

Tottenham were linked with Dennis Cirkin during the summer transfer window, as they contemplated a move to bring the former Hotspur Way starlet back to his boyhood club.

The left-back was excellent for Sunderland last term as they secured promotion to the Premier League, but a pre-season injury and additional competition has prevented him from featuring so far in 2025/26.

Spurs were unable to strike a deal in the summer, however a January move could potentially be on the cards, after Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris delivered an unconvincing message on the defender, when asked about whether he sees him as an important part of his plans this season.

“We’ll see,” he said, according to the Sunderland Echo.

“We’ve stepped up as a club, and as a player, you have to do the same. Because of the injury, it wasn’t possible for him to show his qualities in pre-season. We’ll see later.”

Le Bris has now added to his options on the left of the backline, and while he didn’t flat out suggest that Cirkin isn’t part of his plans, his comments will surely have caught the eye in N17.

He had the chance to back the defender’s ability and quash the interest in him, and the fact that he chose not to perhaps suggests that he may already be resigned to his departure, either in January or at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Dennis Cirkin deal is a no-brainer for Tottenham

Tottenham showed a sustained interest in Cirkin this summer, and Le Bris’ statements will surely have handed them renewed hope that a deal could become available to them.

The Englishman is a promising young talent, and there is additional incentive for Spurs to secure his signature, given that he counts as a ‘club-trained’ player when it comes to consideration for Champions League squads.

The Lilywhites have already selected their group for the league phase, but if they reach the knockouts, then Cirkin could be invaluable to have within their ranks by the time the next selection opportunity comes around.

When you then throw in the fact that he will likely be available for a cut-price fee this winter given his contract situation, it feels like an opportunity that Tottenham cannot pass up.
