Tottenham ‘make Mathys Tel transfer decision already’ as interest confirmed

Tottenham have a decision to make regarding the option to make Mathys Tel’s loan move from Bayern Munich permanent.

Spurs pushed the envelope to sign Tel on loan from Bayern on the final day of the winter transfer window and included a £45million buy option in the agreement.

Two months into his spell in North London, Tel has scored just one goal in eight appearances across all competitions for Tottenham.

Therefore, the France Under-21s international faces an uncertain future at the Premier League club despite their eagerness to bring him on board midway through the season.

Eintracht Frankfurt boss confirms interest in Tel

It is unclear if Tottenham are prepared to fork out £45m to sign Tel based on what he has shown so far, unless they expect Son Heung-min to leave imminently.

That means the 19-year-old is likely to return to Bayern at the end of the season, albeit temporarily.

The attacker was restricted to just three starts across all competitions in the first half of the season at Bayern, and it is hard to see him wanting to continue there next term.

Eintracht Frankfurt are seemingly prepared to offer Tel an escape route if his existing options do not work out, having tried signing multiple times before.

Frankfurt boss Dino Toppmoller has admitted that he wanted to sign Tel last summer and hinted at the possibility of making another attempt this year.

“Mathys [Tel] was a topic during several transfer windows, of course, because I know him and there’s simply a connection”, Toppmoller told Sky Deutschland in quotes shared by Florian Plettenberg (4 April).

“Unfortunately, it didn’t work out the way we had hoped.

“I’m happy for him that he’s now found a club he’s chosen for himself.

“Let’s see how long he stays there – I believe it’s just a loan. We’ll see.”

Tottenham to let Tel leave

It is not often that clubs agree to include a buy option as high as £45m and decide against taking it up.

However, that is a significant amount of money for Tottenham to invest in a single player when they might have to make major additions in other areas of the pitch.

With Ange Postecoglou facing an uncertain future in North London, a lot will also depend on who Daniel Levy might bring in to replace him.

Spurs will be aware that they have to replace Son at some point, but they might just wait one more year before roping in a permanent replacement for him.

That means Tel is set to be on his way out of Tottenham this summer.
