Tottenham ‘can sign off on Romero exit’ after latest international developments

Cristian Romero’s exit from Tottenham this summer is looking increasingly likely.

Romero was named Player of the Match in the UEFA Europa League final. However, the centre-back has been linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

Former manager Ange Postecoglou was adamant in his final press conference as the Spurs boss that the Lilywhites must retain the World Cup winner at all costs.

However, with Postecoglou now gone, Romero is likely less keen to stay at Tottenham. Therefore, Spurs could look to cash in on the 27-year-old, especially after recent international developments.

Luka Vušković makes his Croatia debut

Luka Vušković was signed by Spurs as a 16-year-old from Croatian side Hadjuk Split in 2023 in a deal worth around £12million.

The talented teenager initially stayed with his boyhood club before leaving on a six-month loan deal to Polish side Radomiak Radom.

This season saw him sent out on loan again, this time to Belgian side Westerlo, where the central defender excelled.

The Croatian started every game he wasn’t suspended for and scored an impressive seven goals from centre-back, including an outrageous bicycle kick in December against Club Brugge.

As a result of this impressive form, Vušković was handed his senior debut for Croatia on Monday (9 June) in a 5-1 victory against Czechia.

Vušković took to Instagram (10 June) to celebrate his achievement, posting a photo of himself coming on as a substitute with the caption, “You always remember your first time”.

The 18-year-old’s rapid development is likely to see him secure a spot in the Tottenham first team next season. As a result, the Lilywhites could now sign off on Romero’s exit to make room for the teenager.

Tottenham’s young stars set for the big stage

Vušković joins a growing contingent of young talent at Spurs, where the likes of academy product Mikey Moore and 19-year-old Lucas Bergvall made huge inroads this season.

Thomas Frank, who looks set to join Tottenham, also has a great track record with nurturing talent and was particularly keen on bringing Archie Gray to Brentford before he joined the Lilywhites.

The growth of the young players has been one of the huge positives of this difficult season.

And with the UEFA Champions League on the horizon next season, those young players are set to test themselves on the biggest stage.
