Son Heung-min having the option in his Tottenham contract extended should be a cause for celebration but the man himself has been eerily quiet.
The captain has certainly not been at his brilliant best this season and was only utilised off the bench as Spurs were defeated 2-1 by Newcastle United on Saturday (4 January), a defeat that left them 12th.
Nevertheless, Tottenham announced that they have triggered the extension in Son’s contract on Tuesday (7 January), which keeps him in North London until 2026.
Amid a difficult period at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, this is news that will no doubt have thrilled supporters.
Son Heung-min frustrated at Tottenham
Although the contract extension will have been seen as positive news by many, the news may have highlighted frustrations at the club.
It was reported by The Times [21 December] that the 32-year-old was frustrated over the uncertainty of his long-term future at Spurs.
While this contract extension gives answers for now, it is not a new contract and it fails to address what were seemingly the key concerns of the South Korean international.
Furthermore, since the announcement, the forward is yet to break his silence on social media with the expected contract extension post yet to be seen from the captain.
The radio silence from Son is surely a signal that his frustration in North London continues and therefore, this announcement could actually have created more tension at the club.
A year’s extension could be a signal that the Lilywhites are looking to cash in on their player before he would be able to leave for free next summer.
However, if his reaction to this is anything to go by, this could be a situation that suits the 32-year-old just fine.
