Salah rotten, 7/10 for MOTM – Liverpool player ratings v Tottenham

Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

There was little between the sides on 8 January but it was Spurs who had the ball in the net through Lucas Bergvall, just minutes after he could have faced a red card.

Dominic Solanke had also put the ball in the net earlier in the half before VAR ruled the strike out for offside.

Other than a missed chance from Pedro Porro early in the second half, there was little to talk of going forward for either side but it is Spurs who take a lead into the second leg.

Both sides will now look forward to the reverse tie at Anfield on 6 February with a view to securing a place in the final at Wembley in March.

Tottenham News rated each player’s performance out of 10 on the night.

Alisson – 4

The Brazilian so nearly cost his side in the second half, giving the ball away and affording Porro a golden chance which he couldn’t take. Besides this, the keeper had very little to do until he picked the ball out of the net.

Connor Bradley – 5

The young right-back was in from the start in North London but didn’t make much of an impact before being replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Jarell Quansah – 5

Quansah played just 30 minutes before being taken off due to injury and did very little in his few minutes on the field.

Virgil van Dijk – 6

The Netherlands international was solid once again, as always, and was able to make multiple key challenges and will ultimately be gutted not to keep a clean sheet.

Kostas Tsimikas – 5

Similarly to his full-back counterpart, Tsimikas was unable to have a telling impact on the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but did remain on the pitch for the full 90 and will also be frustrated not to have a clean sheet to his name.

Ryan Gravenberch – 5

A surprisingly poor performance on the whole from the former Bayern Munich man but that is just by his usual high standards.

Alexis Mac Allister shines, Mohamed Salah struggles for Liverpool v Tottenham

Alexis Mac Allister – 7

The World Cup winner was arguably the best player on the pitch for Arne Slot’s side but was taken off with ten minutes to go. It says a lot that he was substituted and just six minutes later Spurs took the lead.

Curtis Jones – 4

Another man who had a quiet night was Jones. There is very little to speak of when it comes to his performance in North London.

Mohamed Salah – 4

A surprisingly poor night for Salah who also had little to no impact on the defeat against Spurs. The Egyptian showed his selfish side but this time had a negative effect on his side which played it’s part in the defeat.

Cody Gakpo – 5

Another player, another quiet night at the office. Gakpo has been on top form recently but did very little to show that in L4. The 25-year-old was hooked with half an hour to go after not providing much going forward on the whole.

Diogo Jota – 4

Jota usually has a telling impact for the Reds but that was not the case against Tottenham. Hardly any goal threat for the Portugal international who was also hooked by Slot with 30 minutes to go.

Substitutes

Wataru Endo – 5

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 4

Darwin Nunez – 4

Luis Diaz – 5

Ibrahima Konate – 5
