Richard Keys called out over glaringly obvious Tottenham oversight

Richard Keys has been called out on X in regards to Tamworth’s FA Cup defeat to Tottenham which saw the tie go to extra time.

Spurs secured their spot in the next round of the FA Cup but were taken to extra time by Tamworth, which in previous seasons wouldn’t have happened.

FA Cup replays were scrapped this season, meaning all ties are to be decided on the day, which in turn caused Tamworth to lose out on some serious windfall opportunities.

That seemingly went under the radar from Keys, who posted on X [12 January]: “I’m loving all these ties coming to a conclusion on the day.

“I can’t think of one small club denied a replay windfall. Everything changes – and ridding ourselves of tiresome replays was the right thing to do.”

Football fans were quick to call him out for his comments, with a flurry of replies simply stating: “Tamworth?”

FA Cup replay importance can’t be overshadowed despite Tottenham win

Quite frankly, given the strength of the team and the dreadful performance, Tottenham just didn’t deserve to progress through to the next round of the cup on Sunday, but a complete oversight from those in charge of the competition allowed them the opportunity.

The magic of the FA Cup is often used to describe the potential benefits of non-league teams and even those further down the pyramid earning a replay at a Premier League ground.

Financially, the benefits can be huge even with a defeat, with it estimated that Tamworth would have earned more from a replay at Spurs than they will through any other means this season and probably beyond.

The change benefits the top teams in England and the complete disregard of those further down the leagues is growing and growing.

Tottenham can certainly count themselves lucky to have a spot in the next round of the competition without the need of another 90 minutes in an already packed schedule.
