Mathys Tel’s top five career moments that will surely offer Tottenham fans hope
Tottenham supporters may be wondering why their club ever signed Mathys Tel, and that would be fair.
Spurs paid around £30million for Tel this summer, turning his loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal.
While he did not exactly light up the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during his loan spell, things look even more dire now.
However, given that the forward is just 20 years of age, there is every chance that he could turn around his form in North London.
Here, Tottenham News looks back at Tel’s top five career moments that demonstrate exactly what he is capable of.

Mathys Tel won the UEFA European Under-17 Championship with France
While North London has been a place of struggle, Tel has found salvation with France, showcasing his talent on the international stage.
Indeed, the 20-year-old’s record for France speaks for itself, which should encourage fans that there is a player in there.
- France under-17s: five goals in nine appearances
- France under-18s: eight goals in 11 appearances
- France under-19s: seven goals in 12 appearances
- France under-21s: nine goals in 16 appearances
In 2022, Tel delivered three goals and an assist on the way to France’s triumph in the under-17 Euros, scoring against Bulgaria and Poland.
Furthermore, the forward captained his side on four occasions, crucially doing so in the final against the Netherlands.

Mathys Tel provides quality moment for Tottenham in the FA Cup
Tel’s gleaming moment in a Spurs shirt came in last season’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Aston Villa.
While the match ended in a 2-1 defeat for Ange Postecoglou’s side, the Frenchman delivered a moment of class for the Lilywhites.
Tottenham ring leader Dejan Kulusevski provided a curling inswinger into the Villa box, which Tel smartly finished past the helpless Emi Martinez.
Not only did he score, but Tel also drew plaudits from Gary Lineker, who described his strike as “exquisite”.
Mathys Tel breaks records for Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich signed Tel from Stade Rennais in 2022 for just over £17m during his fledgling years.
In 2022, the forward made history for the Bavaria club by becoming their youngest-ever goalscorer at 17 years and 126 days.
The Frenchman bagged in Bayern’s 5-0 thrashing of Viktoria Cologne in the DFB Cup, snatching the record from Jamal Musiala, who was 79 days younger when he achieved the feat.
The Tottenham man bags another brace on international duty
While Tel is yet to score a hat-trick during his career, he has notched several braces for his national team.
Earlier this month, the former Bayern man put his club form behind him and produced an inspirational performance yet again for his country.
It took Tel less than two minutes to score for the France under-21s against Serbia, curling the ball into the top corner with his left foot from outside the box.
Then, in the second half stoppage time, the 20-year-old finished emphatically from close range with his right foot to make it 3-0.
Mathys Tel links up with potential Tottenham returnee Harry Kane
There has been significant talk of Kane returning to Spurs over the past couple of weeks, with many believing he could come back next summer.
That news should have pricked the ears of Tel, who linked up well with the England international during his time at Bayern.
Indeed, in April of last year, Tel started as a right-winger for the Bavaria club against Union Berlin, with Kane playing as a sole striker.
The Frenchman first provided Leon Goretzka with an assist before Kane then teed him up for a goal of his own.
Tel finished the match with a goal and assist in the 5-0 drubbing, highlighting his threat when surrounded by world-class players.
