Mathys Tel ‘set for major change’ as Tottenham dealt transfer blow

Mathys Tel will be hoping to lock down a starting spot in Thomas Frank’s team this season.

Tel joined Spurs from Bayern Munich on a permanent deal in June, tying him to the Lilywhites until 2031, after impressing the Londoners during his six-month loan spell last season.

Daniel Levy managed to renegotiate a better deal than the initial purchase option for the France Under-21 international, who was technically Frank’s first signing as Tottenham manager.

The 20-year-old had primarily played on the left of a front three to cover for Son Heung-min’s foot injury issues, but could be set for a new role after recent developments.

Yoane Wissa is unlikely to join Spurs this summer

After signing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham, Frank had set his sights on bringing in a striker at Tottenham to support Dominic Solanke, and had explored a deal for his former player, Yoane Wissa.

The 28-year-old striker, who has one year left on his contract with Brentford, is keen on a reunion with Frank

However, Manchester United’s imminent signing of Bryan Mbeumo has scuppered the move, with Wissa now unlikely to join Tottenham, as reported by Lyall Thomas (18 July).

Brentford are unwilling to let both of their star players leave this summer, leaving Spurs without a lead for a proven Premier League striker.

With time and options running out in the transfer window, Frank could look to his current players to solve his issues, particularly someone like Tel.

The former Bees manager has an excellent record in transforming wingers, such as Wissa and Ollie Watkins, into accomplished centre-forwards.

The 53-year-old could look to repeat the trick with Tel, who could be set for a major change under Frank’s guidance.

Tel has all the attributes to transform into a successful striker

Tel already has some experience playing as a striker for Tottenham, but struggled to perform the same role as Solanke under Ange Postecoglou.

However, his athletic and ball-carrying abilities will fare much better under Frank, who specialises in utilising pacey forwards to get in behind opponents.

Tel also has an excellent shot on him, and with some Premier League experience behind him, the Frenchman has all the attributes to be moulded into a superb striker for Spurs.
