Levy ‘to have final laugh’ at Tottenham after Manchester United transfer update

Tottenham are eager to bring in new players before the winter transfer window closes, which is no surprise given how poor Ange Postecoglou’s side have been this term.

With injuries plaguing the side, the Lilywhites find themselves sitting 14th in the Premier League, well below expectations in North London.

Kevin Danso has been added to the ranks at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, although another defensive recruit in Axel Disasi has fallen through [Ben Jacobs, 3 February].

It’s not just defensively that reinforcements are needed though.

After an injury to Dominic Solanke, alongside an underwhelming campaign from Timo Werner, Spurs could certainly do with bolstering their attacking options.

One man who Postecoglou hoped would solve these issues is Mathys Tel.

Spurs were reported to have had a meeting with Bayern Munich [Fabrizio Romano, 31 January] over a move to North London in the hope of more minutes.

However, after discussions with Daniel Levy over a potential move, Tel then chose to reject the deal [Fabrizio Romano, 31 January] to leave Spurs back at square one.

The young forward has since been linked to a move to Manchester United. However, The Mirror reports (3 February) that this deal has collapsed due to the sides being unable to reach an agreement.

Daniel Levy and Tottenham have the last laugh

Tel is a highly rated young player and given he wanted to leave Bayern Munich to increase his game time and further his career, you can understand why Spurs were keen on recruiting him.

However, the 19-year-old decided to turn that move down, holding out for something he preferred.

The problem now is that with Manchester United unable to reach a deal with Tel’s current club and bridges burned with Spurs, it’s looking increasingly likely that the forward will have to stay put in Germany.

Tottenham, Mathys Tel

This is certainly not what the youngster would’ve wanted at the end of the transfer window given he made the request to leave himself.

Therefore, although Spurs missed out on a player they wanted, the player himself seems set to miss out on the developments he wanted.

This will surely leave Levy feeling like he has had the last laugh as Tel’s decision to turn the Lilywhites down has led to him having to stay put at a side where he is not getting to play the football he wants to.
