‘Levy plays blinder’ as he stalls Man United transfer with huge Tottenham bid
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy looks to have inadvertently prevented Manchester United from sealing a brand new transfer.
Spurs’ transfer window has been incredibly underwhelming, and Levy might even be considering sacking Johan Lange after a series of high-profile failures in recent days.
Although someone has finally been brought in, with the arrival of centre-back Kevin Danso confirmed via the club’s official website on Sunday (2 February), Ange Postecoglou is still in need of a fair few signings.
This was further highlighted by Micky van de Ven’s absence from the Spurs squad which beat Brentford 2-0 in the Premier League at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday (2 February).
However, time is running out, with the window shutting at 11 pm on Monday 3 February, and more importantly it doesn’t seem as though anybody wants to join Tottenham – with several players rejecting a transfer to the club in recent days.
The most high-profile of those rejections was Mathys Tel, who opted against a move to Spurs after face-to-face talks with Levy [via Fabrizio Romano, 31 January].
However, it seems as though Levy has played something of a blinder, with Spurs’ push for Tel stalling United’s own pursuit of the 19-year-old.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy stalls Manchester United move for Mathys Tel
According to Christian Falk (2 February), Manchester United want to sign Tel, and the player wants to move to Old Trafford.
However, the Red Devils are not willing to pay as much as Tottenham were, with the North London club having agreed a deal in principle worth £50million for Tel [via Le Parisien, 30 January].
Bayern wanted to sell Tel to Tottenham, but the player refused the move.
However, the German giants won’t sell the player for anything less than the £50m that Tottenham were willing to pay, which United won’t offer.

Therefore, it looks as though Spurs’ pursuit of Tel is stalling United’s move for the young forward, and with time ticking in the winter transfer window, it seems as though Levy’s failure to convince Tel to join Tottenham after a mega-money agreement could somehow prevent United from agreeing a transfer.
