James Maddison ‘to get Ange Postecoglou sacked’ at Tottenham

Tottenham have endured a largely difficult campaign so far, and sit just 13th in the Premier League table following the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Sunday.

Spurs’ season has been littered with inconsistency and some shambolic performances which have brought the position of manager Ange Postecoglou into question.

Tottenham appear unlikely to even finish in the top-half of this season’s Premier League, after landing fifth spot last campaign.

The North London giants also faced an early FA Cup exit courtesy of last month’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, while they suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final too.

Spurs’ last chance of clinching silverware rests in the Europa League, where they currently have a 1-0 deficit from their Round of 16 first-leg tie with Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar.

Tottenham have been increasingly reliant on James Maddison

The inconsistency which has plagued Spurs’ season has been underpinned by the fact that when creative ace James Maddison plays well, the rest of Postecoglou’s men follow.

But when the England international does not pull the strings to the best of his ability or even get the chance to start, Tottenham are highly susceptible to falling to defeat.

James Maddison holds the key for Tottenham

When Spurs lost to Alkmaar in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash on 6 March, Maddison failed to help break down the Dutch side’s resolute defence.

But during Tottenham’s most recent win in the Europa League, a 3-2 triumph over Hoffenheim on 23 January, the Englishman was exceptional and notched both a goal and an assist.

Similarly, Maddison was at the heart of everything good Postecoglou’s men produced during their 1-0 win in the Premier League against Manchester United, and went on to score the winning goal.

But the biggest endorsement of how key Maddison is to Spurs arrived back in November, when he scored a brace during an unlikely 4-0 win at Manchester City.

Postecoglou’s future as Tottenham boss may rest on Maddison’s shoulders

Tottenham’s progress in the Europa League is the last remaining positive within an otherwise woeful campaign, which has seen them lingering far below where they want to be in the Premier League as well as being knocked out of both domestic cup competitions.

There is no doubt that the progress of Postecoglou has been hindered by long-term injuries suffered by the likes of Dominic Solanke as well as defensive duo Christian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

However, there is no getting away from the fact that Tottenham’s performances this season have been below par time and time again this term.

It could be argued that the only reason why Postecoglou has not been removed from his post as Spurs boss is because his side are still in the Europa League.

However, that could change on Thursday night, if Tottenham are unable to get the better of Alkmaar, who currently hold what could be a crucial one-goal advantage.

If recent performances are anything to go by, Postecoglou will need Maddison to be at his best for Tottenham to emerge victorious against the Dutch side.

If Maddison does not provide one of his better performances, it could be enough to force club owner Daniel Levy to sack the boss.
