Daniel Levy ‘to sack Johan Lange’ after further Tottenham transfer rejections

Tottenham supporters have every right to question what Johan Lange has been doing for the past month.

Ange Postecoglou desperately needs signings with half his squad currently out injured, and some key players appearing no closer to a return to action. However, as of 1 February, Spurs are yet to sign a single outfield player in the winter transfer window.

Therefore, while all the heat appears to be on Daniel Levy, questions must also be asked of Spurs’ Technical Director Lange, who appears to have been sleeping on the job for the last 32 days.

Spurs’ one successful transfer operation this month, which saw goalkeeper Antonín Kinský brought to the club, wasn’t sealed until Levy himself got involved.

Therefore, it is hard to see what exactly Lange has achieved this month.

And after multiple players rejected the chance to join Tottenham, Levy could look to sack the Dane.

Tottenham and Bayern Munich agreed a deal in principle over a £50million transfer for Mathys Tel on Thursday [via Le Parisien, 30 January], with Harry Kane expected to be involved in talks.

However, the player ultimately rejected a move to the club [via Fabrizio Romano, 31 January].

Spurs quickly moved on to their next target, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting via X on Friday (31 January) that the North London club had reached a verbal agreement with AC Milan for the transfer of Fikayo Tomori.

However, in yet another blow to Spurs, Levy and Lange, Tomori has rejected the chance to join Tottenham and prefers to remain with Milan [via Gianluca Di Marzio, 1 February].

Tel’s rejection could be forgiven. The Frenchman is playing for Bayern Munich and has a host of top clubs chasing his signature. However, losing out on Tomori is almost unforgivable.

This is a player in a priority position, and Tottenham failed to attract him to make a move to the Premier League, where he played previously.

And just to rub salt into the wounds, Loïc Tanzi reports via X (1 February) that despite notable interest from Tottenham, Breel Embolo will remain with AS Monaco until the end of the season, as yet another player appears to reject a move to Tottenham.

There are a host of reasons why players might not want to join Tottenham, including the club’s poor league position and Levy’s rigid wage structure.

However, the Spurs chairman isn’t going to be the man to go, and Postecoglou appears safe for now. Therefore, Lange could be sacked as Levy looks to save face and make a statement after an embarrassing few days in the transfer window for Tottenham.
