Daniel Levy ‘must be hailed’ as £60m Romero twist emerges at Tottenham

Tottenham are in danger of losing star defender Cristian Romero this summer, but they will not give up without a fight.

Atletico Madrid are interested in the centre-back, who has also revealed his desire to play in La Liga.

Tottenham did qualify for the Champions League, which may give them some hope of retaining the Argentine, but there will be a battle on their hands.

Spurs have now set a new valuation for the 27-year-old, and Daniel Levy deserves some praise for his handling of the situation.

Tottenham set Romero asking price at £60million

Tottenham are reluctant to sell Romero this summer, and have now set a new valuation for him to ward off potential interested parties.

The Telegraph (26 June) have now reported that Spurs have set a £60million asking price for Romero, with Levy determined to keep him in North London.

Romero has established himself as a key figure for Spurs and was their standout player during the Europa League final victory over Manchester United.

With Atletico Madrid keen on Romero, Levy is refusing to bow down to their pressure, and it now remains to be seen whether they can afford to pay the required fee to sign him.

Romero situation developing at Spurs

Romero appeared close with Ange Postecoglou and was seemingly unhappy when the Australian was dismissed, meaning he could be primed to follow him out the exit door.

Losing Romero would be detrimental for Spurs’ hopes next season unless they replace him well, but given that several areas of the squad need addressing, it will be tough to find a solid successor.

With this in mind, Levy is right to demand a huge fee for him.

If Romero does leave, they will receive enough money to replace him, but if clubs refuse to meet this asking price, he will remain at the club and compete in the Champions League under Thomas Frank.

Romero has made 124 appearances for Tottenham since joining from Atalanta, and is a World Cup winner with the Argentina national team.

If someone wants him, they will have to spend big.
