‘Cristian Romero to leave Tottenham’ after new Bayern Munich developments

Cristian Romero’s uncertain future continues to loom over Tottenham this summer.

Romero has been flirting with a move away from Spurs for months, brazenly stating in an interview in March that he would like to test himself in La Liga.

The World Cup winner was linked heavily with Atletico Madrid, but it has been widely reported that the Spanish giants have given up their pursuit as they could not match Tottenham’s asking price.

Thomas Frank is keen to keep Romero in N17, but the Argentine’s complicated relationship with Daniel Levy could still push him towards an exit this summer.

Tottenham keen on signing Kim Min-jae

Two of Tottenham’s four signings this summer have been central defenders, with Kevin Danso making his loan move from Lens permanent early in the window before Spurs brought in Kōta Takai last week.

With young players returning from their respective loan spells, Frank now has nine available centre-backs, not including Archie Gray.

Nevertheless, Tottenham are interested in Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae, who has fallen out of favour with the German champions, as reported by Tuttomercato (15 July).

The South Korean international was a prominent starter for the Bavarian club before an ankle injury prematurely ended his season, but has not been universally admired in Germany.

Spurs were previously interested in bringing the 28-year-old to North London while he was still at Napoli, especially after having his praises sung by national team captain Son Heung-min.

A move for Kim would see Romero leave Tottenham, as the centre-back would command high wages and only join the Lilywhites if he were a guaranteed starter.

Kim is a solid replacement for Romero

Replacing Romero, who won the UEFA Europa League player of the tournament last season, would be a challenging task.

His front-footed defending and leadership are as unique as his ball-playing abilities, which are crucial to Spurs’ ability to play out from the back.

While Kim does not possess the same aggression as the Argentine, he offers more height in the back line and is very capable with the ball at his feet.

The centre-back is also in the prime of his career and would bring a wealth of UEFA Champions League experience to Spurs, all of which makes him a solid replacement for Tottenham‘s vice-captain.
