Cristian Romero ‘exit closer than ever’ at Tottenham after what Simeone said

Cristian Romero is looking towards the exit door at Tottenham this summer.

It has been a difficult season for the defender who was hit with injuries throughout the campaign, but when he did play he was a star.

Nevertheless, with Ange Postecoglou having been sacked and replaced with Thomas Frank, it seems as though Romero has his heart set on a move away from north London.

Diego Simeone not shy about Romero interest

It has been widely reported that Atletico Madrid want Romero this summer.

Romero has already responded to the reported interest, stating his desire to play in La Liga.

After the announcement of Frank as Tottenham manager, the 27-year-old immediately took to Instagram to post a tribute to Postecoglou, suggesting he is less than impressed with what is going on above him at Spurs.

There may be a desire to leave, but Tottenham are under no pressure at this moment in time, with two years left on the Argentinian’s contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Therefore, if the Spanish outfit do want the defender this summer, they will be required to cough up financially to compensate the Lilywhites for what they will lose.

It seems as though boss Diego Simeone is keen on doing so, though, as he has continued to swoon over the player.

After being thrashed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup on Sunday (15 June), Simeone said to DSports in an interview: “Do I want Cuti Romero? Of course. He’s a great player.”

Simeone comments help Tottenham

It certainly looks as though any relationship between Romero and Tottenham is coming to an end, and it is hard to see a way back, with an exit surely close.

Romero is clearly unhappy with the way Daniel Levy has chosen to run things at Tottenham and with the La Liga club interested, there is a perfect exit plan for him.

Nevertheless, Spurs will surely be a bit irritated by Simeone’s comments, which were certainly brash in their nature.

It could work on Spurs’ side, though.

Both the player and Atletico want a transfer to happen, but Tottenham hold the cards as they are under no pressure.

The opposition boss has made it clear how much he wants a transfer deal to happen, so Levy may as well use this to his advantage to drive up the asking price this summer.
