‘Cirkin edges closer to Tottenham return’ as Sunderland agreement reached

Dennis Cirkin has been linked with a move back to his former club, Tottenham, this summer.

With the PSR deadline now upon us, the expectation will be that Spurs’ transfer activity can be accelerated over the coming week, with several additions needed.

Signing players to improve the starting 11 has to be the priority for Thomas Frank, though, adding bodies to the squad to provide depth and rotation will also be key.

With that in mind, Cirkin has been linked with a return, and that may have just taken one step closer after the latest update from Wearside.

Sunderland set to sign new left-back

Cirkin was instrumental for the Black Cats in their promotion campaign, though an unfortunate number of injuries have hampered his career on Wearside.

When fit, he has shone for Sunderland, and the expectation was that he would be given a chance to showcase his ability in the Premier League, though that may have changed.

Sunderland look set to announce the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo after an agreement was reached, who typically operates in the same position as Cirkin.

Given his pedigree, he’s unlikely to be used as a backup option for a newly promoted side, potentially meaning that the Wearsiders are planning for Cirkin’s exit.

Spurs do hold a sell-on clause in his contract at Sunderland, meaning they could seal his arrival at a discounted price if they pursue it.

Spurs need to make the most of this summer

After finishing 17th in the Premier League, you’d have thought that Spurs would have attached the transfer window with immense ambition, though that has been far from the case.

Daniel Levy has been holding Tottenham back, and until he realises the consequences of his actions so far, there is every chance that last season’s failures are repeated.

That cannot happen, though their recruitment from July onwards will play a telling role.
