View: Where next for Ryan Mason after glowing reviews at Tottenham?
Ryan Mason took charge of Tottenham as interim manager this season for the second time following the sackings of Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini.
The 31-year-old oversaw the final six Premier League games of the season, winning twice, drawing once, and losing three times. Despite the poor run of results, reliable Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold reported there are high hopes around the club of what kind of manager the young coach can become.
“Everyone I have spoken to inside the club, and this is in various departments, they all say the same thing,” Gold said on his YouTube channel.
“He has put so many things in place, just in the last few weeks that will really help the next manager to kick on.
“From what I understand, he has really gone about improving the environment. Bringing departments closer together, who maybe felt neglected and not part of things before. Just getting everyone pulling in the same direction.”
However, the chances of the former midfielder getting the permanent job anytime soon seem slim.
“The expectation is that he probably isn’t going to get the permanent role. I think there is a feeling of that within the club. I get the sense, he knows that as well.
“There are high hopes he will be in a position to return one day to have that job. It’s a job that he dreams of.”
Where next for Mason?
It is clear that Mason is a young coach with a lot of potential, however, he is still just 31 years old, and the Tottenham job seems perhaps too big of a job for him this early in his career.
After his first spell in charge, Mason stuck around and would have learned plenty under Conte with all of the experience that the Italian possesses. Prior to this, he had been working under Jose Mourinho, another legendary coach of the game.
However, with all of this experience under his belt, it might now be time for Mason to venture out and get some experience of his own, with his first full-time managerial position.
It is evident to many that he wants the Tottenham job, and based on Gold’s comments there are many at the club who want to see him in charge, however, it might be a pairing for later down the line.
For now, Mason might be better suited to getting some experience elsewhere and returning to Tottenham as a more well-rounded manager.
