Van der Vaart leaves Stelling & McCoist in stitches after what he said about Tottenham

Rafael van der Vaart left talkSPORT hosts Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist in stitches on with a reference he made to Tottenham.

The former Spurs midfielder was discussing all manner of topics on Tuesday’s show in a lengthy segment with Stelling and McCoist.

Van der Vaart was a firm fans’ favourite during a two-year stint in North London between 2010 and 2012 after signing from Real Madrid.

Clearly, the 42-year-old still has a strong affinity for his former employers given how he finished his talkSPORT segment on the breakfast show on Tuesday.

Van der Vaart shows his love for Tottenham

Former Spurs attacking midfielder van der Vaart hung up his playing boots back in 2018, after making just three Danish Superligaen appearances for Esberg.

But his time with Tottenham, from 2010-2012, was far more memorable as he made 77 appearances for the North London outfit and notched 28 goals and 18 assists.

On Tuesday, van der Vaart expressed his loyalty to Spurs on talkSPORT’s breakfast show, following his guest appearance, which made hosts McCoist and Stelling laugh.

The former Netherlands international signed off by saying: “Thank you (for) having me, come on you Spurs” which left the talkSPORT duo in stitches.

Stelling also revealed: “We’ve had a lot of Spurs (fans) texting in by the way saying he’d be perfect for our midfield right now.”

Tottenham set for season-deciding Europa League clash

The North London giants are experiencing a difficult Premier League season, and sit just 13th in the table after their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City last Wednesday.

Injuries have plagued Tottenham this season as defensive duo Cristian Romero and Micky van De Ven, as well as forward and summer signing Dominic Solanke have all experienced long-term spells on the sidelines.

Romero has not featured for Spurs since their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea in early December, while neither Solanke nor van De Ven have made an appearance since January.

While van der Vaart’s comments on talkSPORT on Tuesday were a simple show of loyalty towards his former club Tottenham, it is easy to see why they caused McCoist and Stelling to laugh.

Ange Postecoglou’s men are enduring a tricky campaign in the Premier League, and even a top-half finish could be beyond the reach of a club who finished just two points adrift of the Champions League spots only last campaign.

Tottenham supporters are still desperate to see their club lift their first piece of silverware since they won the League Cup back in 2008.

The Europa League presents Spurs with their only opportunity to do so this term, and they face the first leg of their Round of 16 tie with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands on Thursday

Postecoglou and co will hope to yield a positive result to take back to North London with them, ahead of next week’s second leg.
