Tottenham want to sign new defender already in January transfer window – report

Tottenham are set to target a left-sided centre-back in January following Micky van de Ven’s injury against Chelsea, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper reported online (9 November) that Spurs are keen to bring in a new central defender as they nervously wait to discover the extent of van de Ven’s injury.

Spurs are expected to revisit a move for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly who was a target in the summer and the Cherries are bracing themselves for a fresh approach, with the 25-year-old out of contract at the end of the season.

Ange Postecoglou has called for his side to do their January business early with the Australian currently short of options in the centre of his defence.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King told Tottenham News:

“A left-footed centre-back is always a good asset and if you have got a spare one who you can bring in that is even better.

“Names like Kelly come up a lot. He is 25-years-old so my question is why is he still at Bournemouth? I suppose Johan Lange and Rob Mackenzie will make their assessments on that.

“I think looking at the whole squad, Tottenham need cover in several positions. What about at striker? They lost Harry Kane in the summer who is of high, high quality. They still have Son Heung-min who is of high quality but who else do they have?

“You have got to be looking all the time at this level. It might be because of the great start that we have had and the consistency of the players that this idea of going out and spending money hasn’t been pushed and discussed more in recent weeks.

“If Spurs don’t have enough depth in their squad they will be battling for a top-four position, not the Premier League title.”
