Stephen Kelly slams dreadful Southampton defending against Spurs

Stephen Kelly was less than pleased with how the Saints backline folded for Johnson’s second goal.

He told BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at 2:45pm: “Brennan Johnson sneaks in. The defending from Southampton is abysmal, absolutely dreadful.

“It is so easy for Tottenham. It’s a great little finish.

“Southampton are devoid of any defensive solidity you’d expect of any team in the Premier League.”

Spurs the weakest team in the Premier League might feel like a morale booster, but it’s a flimsy mask over deeper cracks.

A win against a relegation-fodder side proves little about their quality or consistency.

The worst team in the league is a low bar, and any top club should dispatch them with ease.

Ange Postecoglou is still not the answer for Tottenham

Yet, this result doesn’t erase Tottenham’s broader struggles under Ange Postecoglou.

Their erratic league form, defensive frailty, and failure to compete with the elite persists and that will be on display in the coming weeks.

Even if Spurs are shining in the Europa League, racking up goals against mid-tier European sides, it’s a distraction from the Premier League’s higher stakes.

The Europa League, while prestigious, is a tier below the Champions League, and success there doesn’t excuse a lack of domestic progress,

Spurs fans crave trophies but also a team that doesn’t stumble against mid-table rivals or collapse in big-six clashes.

Postecoglou’s attacking philosophy, while entertaining, has left Tottenham exposed and his inability to adapt tactically has cost points.

A single dominant win doesn’t signal a turnaround as it’s an outlier against a woeful opponent.

Sacking him at the end of the season isn’t knee-jerk but it’s a recognition that, after nearly two seasons, the project lacks the substance to challenge for top-four or silverware.

Tottenham need a manager who can marry flair with resilience, not one whose highs are inflated by beating the league’s punching bag. Postecoglou must go.
