Ange Postecoglou admits it’s ‘impossible’ to analyse Tottenham defeat v Chelsea

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou admits it is “impossible” to analyse his side’s defeat to Chelsea given everything that happened in the game.

Spurs were on the end of a 4-1 loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday (6 November) – their first top-flight defeat of the season – in a contest that had talking points galore.

Five goals were scored and five disallowed, while two red cards were handed out to Spurs players and a penalty was awarded in a Premier League classic in North London.

Tottenham took the lead through Dejan Kulusevski but ultimately came out second best, as a first-half Cole Palmer penalty and Nicolas Jackson’s late hat-trick broke the nine-man hosts’ resolve in the final 15 minutes.

Speaking to reporters after the game, via the Irish Examiner [6 November], Postecoglou was left with mixed feelings after seeing his side battle valiantly.

“It’s pretty hard to process because it’s almost impossible to analyse the game,” he said.

“You’re left disappointed with the result but proud of the efforts of the players and that is the positive we will take out of it.”

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Tottenham News:

“The loss was inevitable at some point – it was highly unlikely that they were going to go the whole season without suffering a defeat,” he said. “That’s the next test for them; it’s how they react to that when and if it comes.

“You look at the likes of Manchester City, look at the likes of Liverpool; it’s consistency, it’s over a season. It’s been a fantastic start to the season, and it’s all about continuity and how they’re doing between now and the end of the season.

“If they pick up enough points to come in the top four between now and the end of the season, it will be an unbelievable season for Spurs with what they’ve had to deal with.

“Losing Harry Kane, the change of manager, the change of style, the change of system, everything that’s gone on at the club, the way things have gone, nobody could have dreamt it’s gone this well.

“To pick up enough points between now and the end of the season and finish in the top four will be an incredible achievement. To keep going the way they are is almost unthinkable but it’s fantastic.”
