Tottenham to ‘spend big bucks’ as Daniel Levy tipped for huge Adam Wharton transfer

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to begin their summer transfer business imminently having resolved the future of Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian boss delivered Spurs their first major trophy in 17 years, but was ultimately sacked following a dismal domestic campaign.

Postecoglou’s sacking was a relatively long and drawn-out process, which prevented Spurs from operating in the transfer market during that period.

However, with Thomas Frank now hotly tipped to step into the dugout in N17, there are plenty of names being linked with a move to the club.

David Bentley has backed Spurs to sign Adam Wharton

Now that Spurs have Champions League football secured for next season, they will have suddenly become a significantly more attractive proposition for potential signings, regardless of how poor their Premier League campaign was last term.

They have already been linked with the likes of Jack Grealish and Bryan Mbuemo, with Daniel Levy understood to be willing to splash out on a significant target this summer.

Now, David Bentley feels that his former club should do everything they can to sign Crystal Palace’s young star, Adam Wharton. The midfielder has been left out of England’s squad for the U21 European Championships this summer, but is still expected to have a big future at both club and international level.

Bentley feels Wharton could help address a key issue in the middle of the park for Spurs.

“I think they (Spurs) should get Adam Wharton from Palace,” the former Tottenham and Blackburn man told Oddschecker (10 June). “They need a midfielder who’s going to sit in there and dictate.

“I wouldn’t say that any of Sarr, Bissouma and Bentancur are good enough at dictating the play. That’s one area they need to improve in for the Champions League.

“I’d be spending big bucks to get someone in who can do that job.”

Wharton would provide Spurs with a different option

As Bentley alluded to, Wharton would provide Tottenham with a completely different option to anyone else in their midfield ranks at present.

The Lilywhites have the likes of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, who are supreme creators and like to play in the pockets of space between the defence and the attack.

They also have plenty of capable ball winners, with Bentancur and Sarr both extremely capable when it comes to covering the ground and winning challenges.

However, they lack a player like Wharton, who is happy to sit in front of the defence and keep things ticking over. The 21-year-old isn’t really interested in going forward, but never wastes the ball, and is reliable enough positionally to help screen the backline.

Had Tottenham had a player with those attributes last season, they surely wouldn’t have been anywhere near as exposed in transition as they were under Postecoglou.

When you throw in the fact that Wharton has massive potential to develop into one of England’s most talented midfielders, Spurs should jump at any possible opportunity to bring him in, even if that means parting with a big sum.
