Tottenham to pay release clause for new manager appointment after overnight talks
Tottenham are moving quickly to appoint Ange Postecoglou’s successor.
Spurs officially announced the Australian’s departure on Friday (6 June), following weeks of deliberation from the hierarchy.
The unpopular decision caused uproar among supporters, with Daniel Levy at the forefront of the Lilywhites’ annoyance at both the ultimate decision and the delay in reaching it.
Tottenham’s official statement indicated that the next manager would be hired in due course, with talks progressing overnight as they look to make a swift appointment.

Tottenham plan to trigger Thomas Frank’s release clause
A list of potential replacements had been drawn up ahead of Postecoglou’s departure, comprising multiple Premier League managers such as Oliver Glasner, Marco Silva, and Thomas Frank.
The latter emerged as a front runner in recent weeks due to the Dane’s excellent record at Brentford, especially given their financial constraints.
Manager | Matches | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goals For | Goals Against |
Thomas Frank | 317 | 136 | 71 | 110 | 527 | 418 |
As reported by Football Insider (7 June), Tottenham have accelerated talks in the last 24 hours and are committed to paying Frank’s release clause worth nearly £10m.
Levy has often been criticised for not fronting up the cash for premium transfers, but the Spurs chairman has always been willing to invest heavily in his managerial appointments.
The West London club are unlikely to stand in the former Brondby manager’s way, who is thought to be keen on a move to join up with Johan Lange, with whom he worked at Danish side Lyngby.
Frank is the safe choice to follow Postecoglou
There was plenty to admire about Postecoglou and Levy’s decision to bring the Australian to North London, but ultimately, the woeful league form that saw the club sink to an unacceptable 17th-place finish was the final straw.
With Frank, there would be no such risks. He is less of an idealist and is far more adaptable, offering Spurs a far safer pair of hands to navigate through the 2025/26 campaign.
There are legitimate questions over his inexperience in handling a big club competing in the Champions League, but he is a self-professed student of the game and will quickly learn accordingly.
His charisma and man management will also be key to help the Postecoglou-loyal squad come to terms with the change and pivot their focus firmly on the next chapter.
