Tottenham to net millions from player loved by Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham could spend big in the transfer market and are set to profit from the transfer of one forward admired by former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lilywhites ended their season with a 4-1 defeat against Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (25 May).

The defeat marked their worst-ever Premier League campaign, finishing one spot shy of relegation, and they will now have to work harder to regroup the funds for a successful summer transfer window.

However, the sale of a forward once adored by Pochettino could balance the books.

Tottenham to profit from the sale of Marcus Edwards

Edwards was hailed as a Lionel Messi regen by Pochettino when he first came through the academy at Spurs.

However, he only played one League Cup game for the North London club before being sold to Portuguese team Victoria in 2019, who later offloaded him to Sporting.

When Tottenham signed Pedro Porro on a permanent deal in 2023, part of the negotiations meant lowering Edwards’ clause by 35 per cent.

The forward flourished under Ruben Amorim before he was loaned out to Burnley this season, who had the opportunity to sign him permanently if promoted.

According to Football London (28 May), it was announced this week that Edwards had completed a move to the Clarets for an undisclosed fee, but reports have placed the figure at £8.4million.

This means that Tottenham would receive around £3million from the deal, thanks to the 35 per cent sell-on-fee, which they could put towards the remaining Porro payments.

Tottenham must spend in the summer transfer window

Ange Postecoglou have given Tottenham a huge springboard by winning the UEFA Europa League and subsequent Champions League football.

This means that Daniel Levy should be looking to strengthen the squad in time for the new season.

The Lilywhites have already been linked with several top talents this summer, including Manchester City’s Jack Grealish and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku.

However, the longer Levy drags out the decision on Postecoglou’s future, the harder securing their transfer targets will be.

Tottenham are going to need to speed up their summer planning and start committing to transfers if they want to compete for all trophies next season.
