Tottenham star speaks out after undergoing unexpected surgery

Ange Postecoglou has had more injury problems than he can count at Tottenham this season.

Spurs are struggling in the Premier League and have just the UEFA Europa League left to play for this year, with Postecoglou facing the sack as a result.

However, it is fair to say that most of Spurs’ troubles can be pinpointed to the incredible amount of injuries they have suffered this term.

More or less every first-team player has spent at least some time on the sidelines, with defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven still nowhere to be seen.

Another key player who spent an extended period ruled out was Guglielmo Vicario, and the goalkeeper has now spoken out after he underwent an unexpected surgery.

Tottenham star Vicario forced to undergo second surgery

Vicario was forced to undergo an initial surgery after he suffered a fractured ankle in the 4-0 Premier League win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 23 November.

It ruled him out for almost three months, with the Italian recently making his return in the 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (16 February).

However, in an exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary titled ‘The Comeback: Vicario’, which was made available via SPURSPLAY, the shot-stopper revealed that he was forced to undergo an unexpected second surgery in December after his body failed to dissolve one of the dissolvable stitches in his ankle.

Speaking at the time of the surgery, Vicario said, via the documentary, “So, this one has been a tricky one. There was a stitch underneath, a dissolvable one, that my body didn’t dissolve.

“I went to the hospital and we had this small surgery in the theatre again, the second time in the last seven weeks. It has been a very tough day. Suddenly, from it being the best day in the last two months, it has become the worst day.

“It is all part of the process, sometimes you have small setbacks. It is what it is, I’m just looking forward.”

Vicario can be a difference-maker for Tottenham

Vicario demonstrated in the win over Manchester United just how important he is for Postecoglou, with fans calling for the 28-year-old to replace Son Heung-min as captain.

Therefore, it is a relief for everybody connected with Spurs that they once again have the goalkeeper available, especially with the Europa League on the agenda from March.

If Postecoglou’s side are going to win that competition, they will need a big squad, and Vicario is an important part of the squad.

Therefore, with the Italian between the sticks, and some other players still to return from injury, confidence should slowly be increasing about the prospect of Spurs clinching the Europa League in May.
