Tottenham star plans to quit Postecoglou’s side after what ex-Spurs star has heard

Teddy Sheringham believes big changes are on the cards for Tottenham in the summer.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham have suffered a dismal campaign, sitting 17th in the Premier League with 21 losses to their name

Spurs face Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday, with the winner not only winning silverware but also qualifying for the 2025/26 Champions League.

For the losers, there’ll be no European football at all next season.

Sheringham casts doubts over Tottenham star’s future

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, via Prime Casino, Sheringham highlighted Cristian Romero as one player who could look to jump ship this summer if Spurs suffer Europa League heartbreak.

“I don’t think Heung-min Son will try to force his way out, but I think Cristian Romero may be planning to leave,” stated the Tottenham legend. “He might have that in his mind.

“I mean, there’s been a lot of speculation all through the season anyway that he’s hoping to go to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

“Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes? But top players want to play at the top level.”

Romero could be Real Madrid-bound even if Tottenham are victorious

Even if Tottenham win the Europa League and secure Champions League qualification, it might not be enough to keep Romero in North London.

The Sun have reported that Real Madrid are keen on the defender, with incoming boss Xabi Alonso believed to be a huge fan of Romero.

Therefore, it may not matter what result Spurs achieve in Bilbao.

Tottenham are a better side with the Argentinian

Madrid have already taken Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and wouldn’t think twice about raiding the Lilywhites this summer.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have suffered a poor season by their standards, failing to secure the La Liga, Copa Del Rey or Champions League titles, which has led to the Italian’s exit from the club.

A poor defensive unit has been cited as one of the main reasons as to why they have suffered, so their ambition to splash on Romero is understandable.

By pairing Romero with the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Los Blancos believe they could create a strong base from which to challenge under Alonso next term.

Alonso also opts to set up with a back three and would therefore require a new centre-back if he is to install that system at the Bernabeu.

Tottenham may save their season, and potentially Ange Postecoglou’s future with victory in the Europa League final – but it may not be enough to retain their World Cup winning defender.
