Tottenham slammed for what they did v Hoffenheim – ‘Panic Stations’
Steve Nicol has slammed Tottenham for their inability to see games out confidently after a 3-2 victory against Hoffenheim in the Europa League.
Spurs took the lead through James Maddison after just three minutes on Thursday (23 January) and made it 3-1 in the 77th minute through Son Heung-min.
However, the Lilywhites did not kill off the game and instead it was their opponents who scored to make it 3-2 in the 88th minute, serving up a nervous end to the game.
Speaking live on ESPN (23 January, 0:33), Nicol highlighted a pattern in Spurs as he said: “Heung-min Son getting that third goal really was the clincher because, as I said, when that first goal for Hoffenheim went in, they really were on top at that time and so that Son goal took the pressure off.
“But again, typical Tottenham, they couldn’t see it out without any pressure. They lose a goal with two minutes of normal time to go and it’s kind of panic stations right until the final whistle.
“But all that matters is they win the game and they can go home with a smile on their face.”
Tottenham relieved to win against Hoffeheim
After what has been a difficult few weeks for Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham team, the Lilywhites will have felt plenty of relief coming away from Hoffenheim with a win, especially as they made it hard for themselves.
As Nicol says, it’s typical of Tottenham to leave themselves open to conceding, even when they are 3-1 up and should be seeing out the game and their own mistakes meant they were having to hang on in the final couple of minutes.

That being said, the win is all that matters especially given how poorly Postecoglou’s side are doing in the Premier League this term, sitting 15th in the table.
Spurs’ poor form has brought about plenty of speculation over the Australian’s future in North London and the only way he will be able to stop this from getting too loud is by keeping his side in their cup competitions in the hope of bringing silverware to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
