Tottenham set to trigger Son Heung-min contract extension option to avoid Harry Kane exit repeat – report

Tottenham are set to trigger the extension option in Son Heung-Min’s contract in North London to ensure they are not repeating the mistakes made on Harry Kane, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper has reported (21 September) that Son’s existing deal is scheduled to expire at the end of next season but Spurs hold the option to extend it by at least a further year which they will take up.

It’s also believed that although the option has not yet been triggered and is unlikely to be imminent, the expectation and intention of both the club and their star man is that it will eventually be activated.

Having been effectively forced to sell Harry Kane to Bayern Munich over the summer, with one year remaining on his deal, Tottenham will not want to face a similar situation over the South Korean superstar.

Significant boost

After the damaging loss of Kane and the saga that had embroiled the club for many months prior to his inevitable exit from North London, it seems as though Spurs have learned their harsh lessons.

They’ve simply got to be proactive in regard to some of their star player’s futures and not let any contract stand-off or uncertainty fester into something catastrophic down the line.

And that’s the action they are taking with Son here, which should now be perceived as a huge credit to Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou as the South Korean remains and will always remain a key part of what the Australian is trying to build in North London.

In fact, Postecoglou had already made his stance on Son and his importance to the Spurs cause very clear earlier this summer when he made him club captain, with the added help of Cristian Romero and summer signing James Maddison.

With Tottenham now possessing quite a young spine, it’s important that Postecoglou identified the players that will set the tone and Son has always been that player in the Spurs dressing room even when the likes of Kane, Dier and Lloris were seeing as the leading captains at the club before the Australian arrived.

Spurs can ill-afford to lose any star players the way they did Kane and it was important they came to some sort of an agreement with Son regarding his long-term future. And that aim has been achieved after this latest development.

The North Londoners can now rest assured knowing the future of their most prized asset is secure even though he hasn’t signed on the dotted line yet, it’s such proactiveness that they should have practised over a year ago with Kane.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs have reached an agreement on personal terms for the permanent signing of one Croatian top talent.
