Tottenham set for transfer snub, ‘West Ham will be the only team he’ll sign for’

Tottenham are falling behind in the transfer market as West Ham look to steal their latest target.

The Lilywhites’ inability to compete on multiple fronts this season highlighted the importance of strengthening the squad this summer, but dealings at Tottenham have stalled.

Vinai Venkatesham’s arrival, along with the potential return of Fabio Paratici, have shaken up Tottenham’s operating system, likely contributing to the Londoners being a step behind their rivals in the market.

The indecision over Ange Postecoglou’s future is not doing them any favours either, with the club now set to lose out on yet another transfer.

Angel Gomes to choose West Ham over Tottenham

Tottenham’s squad needs are numerous ahead of the new campaign, but they are particularly desperate for an experienced central midfielder who can operate as a link between attack and defence.

This led them to target Gomes, who recently announced he was leaving Lille.

The versatile 24-year-old can play in a variety of different positions across the midfield, with his excellent technical qualities allowing him to seamlessly slot in wherever required.

The England international would offer a different dynamic to the current players at Spurs. However, according to ex-West Ham midfielder Martin Allen, speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone (4 June), Gomes is set to snub Spurs for his former side.

“He’s a player that Graham Potter would love for the middle of the pitch,” Allen said.

“I would imagine that will be a high-priority deal on a free transfer to get someone like him to become the engine of the team.

“I can’t imagine he’d go to Tottenham with all their midfield players, he’d be the main man at West Ham, so I can’t see him signing for anyone else but West Ham.“

This is not the first example of the Hammers scuppering a Spurs target, though the direct loss of Gomes emphasises the lack of pulling power the North Londoners currently possess.

Gomes would tick lots of boxes at Tottenham

Gomes may not be the calibre of signing the Lilywhites would hope for, but the diminutive midfielder would arrive on a free transfer, which is a rarity for a player of his ability, let alone a homegrown player that Spurs desperately need to satisfy their UEFA Champions League quota.

His attributes would also suit the squad Spurs currently possess, who are physically gifted but lack the former Manchester United academy’s technical proficiency.

Gomes is also the right age profile for Spurs, bringing experience and the room to develop further, which should incentivise the club not to miss out on his signing.
