Tottenham sack coach who now wants to be next Middlesbrough manager
Tottenham Hotspur will be set for a revamp of their coaching department ahead of next season.
The Lilywhites finally reached the decision to part company with Ange Postecoglou on Friday (6 June), after a lengthy period of consideration following their recent Europa League triumph.
The Australian delivered Spurs their first trophy in 17 years, but that wasn’t enough to offset a dismal domestic campaign and save his job.
As can be expected when a manager departs, there have also been plenty of coaching exits at Tottenham in the aftermath of Daniel Levy’s decision.

Nick Montgomery is in the frame for the Middlesbrough job
We have already seen one Tottenham coach step into the Championship as a manager this summer in Ryan Mason, and now we could be set to see another make the same move.
Nick Montgomery is one of the three coaches set to depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Postecoglou’s sacking, and now the 43-year-old has emerged as a contender to take over at Middlesbrough, according to the print edition of The Mirror (8 June, pg. 59).
Boro flirted with the play-offs all season in the second tier, but ultimately laboured to a 10th-placed finish, which has since cost Michael Carrick his job.
Montgomery had been one of Postecoglou’s assistants, but he could now be set for his own return to management.
The former Hibernian boss is understood to be rivalling Rob Edwards, Steve Cooper and Gary O’Neil to take the reins on Teeside.
Montgomery’s managerial career
Montgomery will be a name who will be familiar with Middlesbrough fans, as he spent 12 years at Sheffield United during his playing career.
He moved to Australia in the latter stages of his time as a player, and that helped pave the way for his coaching career. He stepped into coaching with the Central Coast Mariners before becoming their manager in the summer of 2021 and guiding them to the A-League title in 2023.
His exploits there earned him a move back to the UK to take on the Hibernian job, but things didn’t go to plan for him in Scotland. Montgomery was sacked at the end of his first season in the role, having led the Edinburgh outfit to a bottom-half finish in the Scottish Premiership.
Now, with Carrick touted to take Postecoglou’s place, Spurs and Boro could be set for a surprising exchange.
