Tottenham relegation odds crash after ‘significant’ Postecoglou development

Tottenham Hotspur have seen their relegation odds shorten “significantly” to suffer an unimaginable Premier League relegation with William Hill.

As of Tuesday afternoon (28 January), Spurs have seen their odds to drop down to the Championship plummet to 20/1, having last week been marketed at 150/1.

Following Sunday’s home defeat to Leicester City (26 January), William Hill’s odds on Tottenham to fall through the trap door were shortened to 33/1, as Ange Postecoglou finds “pressure mounting” on his job.

“Things are going from bad to worse for Tottenham at the moment, with back-to-back Premier League defeats adding to their season’s woes, and we [did] have them at 33/1 to be relegated,” William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps explained.

“Ange Postecoglou’s side have struggled to find any form as of late, picking up one point in their last seven games in the league, leaving them just eight points clear of the drop zone.

“With pressure mounting on Postecoglou’s shoulders, his side’s odds of relegation have shortened significantly in the last week, down to 33/1 from 150/1.”

Now ranked at just 20/1, only six sides have shorter odds to be relegated – one of whom is Manchester City, due to the uncertain outcome of their 115 financial ruling charges.

Tottenham unsure where to turn next amid relegation fear

It is quite incredible how Tottenham have wound up in their current position, having given Leicester their first points in eight games on Sunday having led at half-time.

Injuries and suspensions aside, it is inexplicable how Daniel Levy, Postecoglou and the squad available have let it come to a situation whereby Spurs sit 15th in the Premier League after 23 games.

Incredibly, Postecoglou’s style of play has yielded the sort of double-edged success that fans in N17 are now sick of hearing. They have still scored the third-highest number of goals in the division, yet are free-falling into the abyss of a survival battle.

Away from league action is Postecoglou’s respite right now and undoubtedly the reason he remains in post. Levy’s potential reluctance to offer a significant payout is likely to be another factor.

In the Europa League, all is going to plan; they are 90 minutes from a Carabao Cup final, and are into the fourth round of the FA Cup, however fortuitously that came.

The season can still bring some level of success, and a long-awaited trophy would paper over dozens of cracks. But it only makes Spurs’ situation dormant – it certainly won’t improve overnight.
