Tottenham Premier League relegation play-off idea proposed – ‘Unbelievable’

Tottenham sit just one place above the relegation zone in the Premier League.

The club have already registered their highest number of losses in a league campaign, and with the clash against Aston Villa looking ominous, could yet set more unfavourable records.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side have been bitterly disappointing and would normally have had real relegation fears had the promoted clubs not struggled quite as much.

Spurs fans still could have something to cheer with the Europa League final on the horizon, but it would only paper over the cracks that have emerged in North London.

Relegation playoff proposed on Peter Crouch podcast

Championship clubs are in the midst of playoffs, with Sunderland set to face Sheffield United for the final Premier League place next season.

A spectacular reverse scenario was proposed on the Peter Crouch podcast to decide the third club to drop to the English second tier.

The proposed relegation play-off system would pit the 15th to 18th placed Premier League team against each other, with the loser joining the 19th and 20th placed sides in dropping to the Championship.

It would make Premier League survival much less of a given, and would present a viable form of jeopardy for clubs ‘too big to fall,’ who have had poor seasons, like Tottenham or Manchester United.

Premier League last 10 games for the bottom 5 clubs

While the form table over the last 10 league games mirrors the current Premier League table, the points tally shows how close Tottenham’s results have been to the relegated sides.

Such has been their dropoff that it has sparked debate whether they are worthy of participating in the Champions League should they overcome Manchester United.

Tottenham eye era-defining fixture

Tottenham find themselves at a crossroads with almost an infinite number of directions they could go, a lot of which will be dictated by their Europa League final result.

A victory could finally provide a tangible springboard for them to jump off, restoring some belief and offering a more positive outlook on the future for the very eager Spurs fans.

Should they fail, it will go down in history as the worst season in Daniel Levy‘s 24-year tenure and will leave the fans more disillusioned with the club’s direction than ever.
